Millennials get a bad rap. Some say they’re lazy, while others highlight the amount of time they spend on their phones. Then, there’s the avocado toast — one millionaire actually said millennials don’t buy houses because of their expensive breakfast habits.

However, this group doesn’t deserve the reputation at all. One big piece of proof in that department is that they’ve become known as the wellness generation. Their concern for mental, physical and emotional health warrants some serious accolades. Here’s how they earned their most positive moniker.

Millennials Value Their Health

It’s not a coincidence that millennials have become known for their healthy mindsets. This generation values their physical health above most other things, and it shows.

One poll showed that 20.1% of the U.S. millennial population was obese. In contrast, 32.5% of the rest of the country’s adult population fell into the same category. Fewer millennials have developed diabetes at their age, compared to previous generations.

Much of this difference comes down to their dedication to physical fitness. Many millennials consider exercise part of their daily routines. Plus, they take care of their bodies by ditching the bad habits of previous generations. For instance, they smoke much less than adults before them.

Then, of course, there’s the millennial diet plan — or lack thereof. This concept is, of course, where the avocado toast debacle comes in. The controversy surrounding their love of the delicious green fruit stems from a generational focus on healthy, nutritious eating. Most millennials consider a varied, robust diet to be part of their life. They steer clear of the restricted diets that have been deemed healthy in the past and instead eat well and stay balanced.

Some of the credit here goes to millennials’ familiarity with technology. They have so many apps and programs to help them track goals and gains. Ultimately, though, the credit goes to the person with the dedication to follow the plan — and millennials have that drive.

Millennials Take Their Careers to Heart

In the past, young adults would keep their heads down and work, even in jobs or careers they hated. The same will not be said for millennials, who have shown they will make moves until they land in a worthwhile career.

Of course, the term “worthwhile” is subjective, but many millennials have the same criteria when they search for jobs. They want to work for businesses with values that match their own. Plus, seeking such a company gives them a greater sense of fulfillment and purpose — a significant benefit for mental health.

On that note, millennials prioritize work-life balance more than previous generations. Their push for flexible hours, remote work and ample vacation time has begun to revolutionize the workplace for everyone. As this group starts to have families, they expect sensible benefits for new parents, including paid maternity leave. They also want all of the typical benefits of having a 9-to-5 job, including healthcare coverage and life insurance, a smart investment for them at an early age.

Millennials Love Self-Care

It’s crucial to highlight the millennial adherence to their self-care regimens, too. This trend sprouted from their age group — everything from face masks to meditation to driving with the windows down can be classed as a form of personal care these days.

Self-care is more than just an excuse to indulge oneself with a fancy spa treatment or glass of wine. Usually, it’s a time for millennials to decompress after a long or mentally taxing day. They take time to think, breathe and restore themselves for what’s ahead. These moments make them feel better and do better. Nowadays, self-care is seen as a vital part of parenting — to be a good mom or dad, you have to take care of yourself.

Another millennial-approved form of self-care is therapy. This age group has fought back against the long-standing stigma surrounding those who seek treatment for mental health issues. In fact, some refer to them as the “therapy generation” because they’re so willing to get treatment. Mental health is a huge factor in a person’s overall wellness, and millennials have shown why it should be a priority for people of all ages.

That’s true of all forms of self-care — it’s worthy of everyone’s time. Now, more and more people have begun to see that, and it’s all thanks to millennials who have paved the way.

Healthy living isn’t an option for millennials — it’s a must. They’ve made that clear through all their physical, mental and emotional health pursuits. That’s precisely how they’ve earned their most fitting moniker, the wellness generation.

Don’t believe the hype when it comes to millennials. They’re not lazy or uncommitted or wasting money on expensive brunch — they’re taking care of themselves in ways that every other generation should mimic. Perhaps it’s your turn, too.
