As a mother, you’re always on the move. For many moms, the start of the day tends to be the most stressful. You need to wake up, get dressed and eat breakfast – and make sure that your children do the same! That’s why it’s essential to put together a concise, structured routine. You’ll feel a lot better, mentally and physically.

1. Start With a Moment for Yourself

Sometimes, you’ll wake up after your alarm clock. We’re all human! That said, it’s essential to make an effort to wake up early so that you can take a moment for yourself. Whether you want to say a prayer or practice meditation, try to start your day with a peaceful action. This way, you can take a more mindful approach to your to-do list. As a result, you and your kids can avoid arguments and tantrums.

2. Plan Your Schedule Ahead of Time

When you plan ahead, you won’t feel rushed or anxious. There are a ton of ways to prepare beforehand so that your day goes smoothly. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Set out everyone’s outfits: You won’t need to spend 30 minutes in front of a mirror.
  • Prepare breakfast and lunches: You can make overnight oats or pre-bake a casserole. That way, your kids can eat a healthy meal and skip sugary foods.
  • Grab after-school activity equipment: If your children play sports, ask them to put together their bags and set them by the front door. You can snag them as you leave the house.
  • Shower: After your kids go to sleep, do your skincare routine and take a shower. You’ll be ready to go as soon as you wake up.

If you can do a little work the night before, your mornings should feel a lot easier. Of course, you can’t always plan for tomorrow – but these suggestions will give you a much-needed head start. Plus, your kids can learn about responsibility as they plan their days. You could start with make-ahead breakfasts and go from there.

3. Incorporate a Workout

Not everyone wants to work out at dawn, especially when you need to pay attention to rambunctious children! Many people think that exercise leaves you tired, but that’s not the case – in fact, you should complete a workout and be able to take on your day. If you get tired, you may be pushing yourself too hard or eating the wrong foods.

Try a quick session of yoga or pilates after you wake up. On your rest days, stretch instead. You’ll feel refreshed and recharged.

4. Put Together Meals

If you’re a stay at home mom or tend to work from home, now’s an excellent time to prepare dinner. After you take your kids to school, head back home so that you can put together whatever you need for later. Try a recipe you can whip up in a matter of minutes. For a simple beef stew, for instance, all you need to do is toss cubed beef, carrots, potatoes, onions and a few other ingredients in a crockpot. You can also make avocado toast with a fried egg on top.

5. Keep a Fun Atmosphere

Your morning routine can feel a little stressful when there’s a constant rush. Sometimes, it’s best to maintain a fun atmosphere. If you can, play music as you get dressed. You’ll want to make sure that everyone’s ready for the day, but keep conversations lighthearted. Don’t worry about tests or quizzes – let your children mentally prepare for school. We sometimes forget that education isn’t always a breeze.

If you and your children can joke around at the start of the day, you’ll limit possible meltdowns. You could even use these moments to enforce rewards as a way to acknowledge your kids’ efforts. Then, they’re more likely to participate in your routine.

6. Leave Room for Errors

Let’s face it – a perfect morning won’t happen every day. That’s why it’s necessary to leave room for potential errors. You and your kids should wake up early enough so that mistakes don’t impact your routine. When one child can’t decide on what socks to wear with their pants, those extra moments make a difference. Did you forget someone’s bookbag? Now, you can run home and grab it.

It isn’t fun to wake up before six or seven, especially when you’re not an early bird. That said, your effort makes a massive difference!
